Blog#2 Listening Better.

Learning the art of practical long range shooting is not a quick journey, but what I have learnt in the last few years is that it’s a journey that can be speed up significantly with the correct help and instruction from people with far more experienced than you...but the correct experience.

I’m lucky enough to get help and advice from a couple of very experienced shooters who have fundamentally sound skills sets and give me pointers to iron out issues I’m having or ways to tweak my body position, natural point of aim, recoil management and trigger control. One thing I have found here is to recognise when someone is far more knowledgeable in a specific subject and to sit down and listen. Trust me when I say that there is always someone better at precision shooting then you and that there is always more you can learn. It’s ok to ask why you should apply the advice they are offering but you should never disregard the advice and think you know better. 

It’s very hard to see problems in your  own shooting but it can be very obvious for a experienced shooter to see what you could improve on when it comes to applying the fundamentals.

I know finding someone to help out isn’t always easy or even possible in some cases so my next best piece of advice would be to come along and compete at a match.

Tell your squad you are new to the game and if they have any pointers it would be appreciated, we build the squads to have at least one experienced competitor in each so it’s not just going to be a bunch of newbies put together.

Failing that you could turn to online training from the likes of www.moderndaysniper.com or www.snipershide.com. This isn’t free but these guys know their trade better than most.

Last but not least, avoid long range groups on Facebook. You are better of getting advice from the checkout guy at Bunnings then asking for help on a Facebook group.

Remember there are a lot of really good bad shooters out there, don’t be one of them.
