Advance Core Competition Chassis from MDT

Unless you have been living under a rock you will have heard of Modular Driven Technologies or more commonly called just MDT. They have changed the game when it comes to precision rifle chassis and accessories over the last few years and have become very popular here in New Zealand as our own precision shooting get more and more popular.

The chassis I am going to shine a spotlight on today is the ACC or Advance Core Competition chassis, this model was purpose built for precision style shooting competitions and had heavy input from various professional shooters from around the globe and has become a favourite with precision shooters and aims to give you everything you could want from a chassis intended for precision competition use.

I had been thinking of putting together a new setup for competition use for a while and had a brand new 6mm Creedmoor Howa 1500 barrelled action sitting in my safe for 6 months, so when I had the spare cash I gave Target Dynamics a call and ordered the MDT ACC, I was lucky enough to pick up the last one in the country at the time and as per normal Target Dynamics made the process very easy.

The new ACC is feature rich compared to other chassis I own and one of the main design features of the ACC is the ability to bolt on nearly eight pounds of extra weights the length of the forearm to either customise the balance of the rifle or just add weight to minimise recoil. As I’m not after a 30 pound rifle and am happy with the balance so I chose not to add any weights to my setup with the idea that this rifle would be shot unsupported from time in competition. If I was to run this particular chassis in an prone only or ELR style setup then I would bolt on as much weight as I could to assist with reducing recoil and adding stability when shooting in the prone position.

The chassis has a 17’’ long forend that is M-LOK compatible and has an ARCA rail machined along the whole underside of it. This makes it easy to attach to tripods or if you have a ARCA compatible bipod you can then slide the bipod back and forth to suit your requirements for different shooting positions. Wait…what is ARCA? It’s a clamp system that originates from the photography world and has been adopted by the precision shooting world for attaching temporary accessories to your firearm. It’s a two piece system comprising of a clamp and a plate that quickly lock together tightly and can be loosened slightly to allow the plate to slide through the clamp. Now that tripod shooting is becoming more popular it’s not uncommon to see precision rifles chassis such as the ACC with ARCA machined strait into the forend.

There are also a host of other small features such as a flared magazine well, thumb shelf and a barricade stop all machined in from factory to try and help improve your performance when competing.

The stock I chooses to go with the chassis is the MDT XTN Elite (yes the back part is still called a stock) This has adjustment on length of pull, check height, but pad height and tilt. This allows the user to tailor the fit of the stick to suite themselves. My one complaint about this stock is the plastic thumb screws that are pushed into the brass cap screws for all the adjustable point strip out very easy. I would prefer an all steel thumb screw to avoid this issue. Not a big complaint but when you lay down this much cash they should be better.

As for a pistol grip I always choose the MDT vertical grip as I find this allows for consistent 90 degree trigger control and you can move it back and forward to prevent you having to stretch you hand forward to pull the trigger while trying to retain control of the pistol grip. These are either hated or loved by shooters so its purely a personal preference on the style of grip you go with.

Would I put this on a hunting gun? No of course not, but then again I am not talking about hunting here. This article is aimed at those wanting to shoot the very popular precision rifle style shoots we have in both the north and south islands of New Zealand.

There is only so much I can write about a chassis system alone but to sum it all up this is another great product from MDT.

If you are after one of these chassis or any other MDT products here in NZ then head over to www.targetdynamics.co.nz or www.gunrack.co.nz and they will sort you out.
