Surplus Steel 2023

We ran the first ever Surplus Steel event in January 2022 and it proved to be an extremely popular event, so its back for 2023 with what will be an even more over the top event from last year.

Entries for Sniper Class open on FaceBook at 7pm on Monday the 31st of October and Infantry Class opens one week later on Monday the 7th of November at 7pm also. More info around entering can be found on our Facebook page.

The event cost this year is $130, yes there is an increase over last year but it is for a very good reason and it has nothing to do with inflation…..it is something to make your day far more interesting and certainly way more fun!

Event Rules for Sniper and Infantry Classes for the 2023 Surplus Steel Event.

As you will see we have reasonably strict rules around the firearms that can be used and the “as issued” condition they must be in. I have had many recommendations to change these rules to allow modern scopes, sporterised rifles and even none service rifles in and I can tell you after no consideration they will still NOT be allowed in Surplus Steel.

Rifle and Equipment Rules

Any bolt action military issue rifle in original “as issued” condition is allowed in its original service calibers only such as 303, 8mm , 6.5x55 and 7.5x55. There is no rules around what projectile weight is used or what speed the projectile carves at as long as it dose not exceed 3,200 FPS.

If vintage ammunition is being used (surplus ammo) then there will be a 30 second “hang fire” time that must be adhered to in the event of a trigger being pulled and the rifle not going off. Competitors shooting modern sporting ammo will not be required to follow this rule.

No sporting rifles or caliber conversions that were not fielded by a nations military are allowed, rifles must be issued and not a one of experimental or trails rile.

All rifles and ammunition will be checked at tech inspection on the morning of the event.

Original or reproduction slings are allowed. No target shooting non issued slings are allowed.

No range finding equipment is allowed.

No rear bags or other modern accessories are allowed.

Infantry class rifle and equipment rules:

Infantry class rifles are to be as issued bolt actions for infantry use with original iron sights and no modifications to stocks other changes that would have got you put on latrine duty during the war. So that means no post war target shooting sights, specialty slings or bipods. If it didn’t come with it for infantry use then you can’t use it. Its pretty simple but if you need clarification then get in touch.

Marksman class rifle and equipment rules:

This class is intended to be for Sniper or Marksman weapons from the 20th century with original or faithful reproductions of the firearms as they were used in service. The cutoff for this is essentially the mid 1970s before the accuracy international came into service. No modern sporting firearms are allowed. No modern optics allowed.Get in touch if you have any questions in regards to this.
